Professor Tuomilehto, MD, MPolSc, PhD is Professor of Public Health, University of Helsinki, Finland. His research interests include the epidemiology, aetiology and prevention of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neuroepidemiology and randomised controlled trials. He has contributed to several major research projects such as the North Karelia Project, WHO MONICA (MONItoring trends and determinants in Cardiovascular disease) project and several epidemiological studies of cardiovascular disease in Finland. He is the lead investigator in the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study and the Diabetes Epidemiology: Classification of Diabetes in Europe (DECODE) and in Asia (DECODA) studies on the epidemiology of glucose regulation, and co-Principal Investigator of the Finland-United States Investigation of NIDDM genetics (FUSION). He is actively involved in several international scientific organizations including, International Diabetes Epidemiology Group (past President), European Society of Cardiology Science Council and the Working Group of Epidemiology and Prevention (past-chair), the Science Panel on Neuroepidemiology of the European Federation of Neurological Societies (past-chair) and International Prandial Glucose Regulation Group. He is member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. He chaired the National Task Force for the Primary Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes in Finland. He belongs to several scientific advisory boards and editorial boards. He is recipient of many international distinguished science awards. He has contributed to over 1000 peer-reviewed scientific publications.
