Release of software for new and revised UKPDS Outcomes Model v2

11-May-2015

The updated software for the new and fully revised second version of the UKPDS Outcomes Model© (OM2) was released today.

The UKPDS Outcomes Model© is a computerised simulation tool designed to estimate Life Expectancy, Quality Adjusted Life Expectancy and the cumulative costs of complications in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). OM2 uses the peer-reviewed equations and algorithms published in the UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) paper 82 (Diabetologia 2013;56:1925-1933). This new incarnation of the UKPDS Outcomes Model© has significant advantages over the previous OM1, as it captures more outcomes, is based on longer follow-up data, and more comprehensively captures the progression of diabetes. Its use will permit detailed and reliable lifetime simulations of key health outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The main outputs for OM2 are estimates of:
- Life Expectancy,
- Quality Adjusted Life Expectancy
- Costs of therapies
- Costs of complications
- Total costs

All of these are provided with 95% confidence intervals and, if required, with discounting applied. Utility and cost values are also output for each year of simulation.

Quality Adjusted Life Expectancy values can also be listed for each simulated year for each simulated subject. The model now outputs cumulative event rates by simulated year and can produces Kaplan-Meier event-free survival plots where appropriate.
