DTU Director gives plenary lecture at the IDF World Diabetes Congress

09-Dec-2013

Professor Rury Holman gave an invited plenary lecture at the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) 2013 World Diabetes Congress in Melbourne, Australia on 4th December. More than 10,000 people from across the globe attended the conference.

Entitled "Treatment Update", and part of the Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Symposium, Prof Holman's talk described how it is time for a stratified approach to treating type 2 diabetes. He described how currently, treatments for the condition tend to be added in the same sequence for all patients. In the future, it may be possible for doctors to provide personalised treatment strategies at each stage of the diabetes pathway, using a combination of clinical phenotype, genomic and other biomarkers, to predict the most appropriate drug or drug combination for an individual at a given time.
